05-27-2019 | 7:50 PM | WURTSBORO,NY — On Monday, May 27, 2019 at 7:50 p.m., it was made aware to the Sullivan County 911 center that two hikers were lost in the Shawangunk Ridge State Forest in the area of Herlings Rd in Wurtsboro, NY. It is unclear where the hikers were going but it is apparent that they lost course and ended up in a remote area off of a trail in the forest.
Summitville Fire Department and Wurtsboro Fire Department established a command center at the end of Herlings Road and began the search for the hikers using a team of ground volunteers who scoured the area. Two all terrain vehicles were also deployed to assist in the search. The search began around 7:50 p.m. and the subjects were rescued by 10:00 p.m. and were quickly placed in a Mamakating First Aid Squad ambulance to be accessed for any injuries That could have been suffered while they were hiking. No injuries were reported and it appears that only minor dehydration was suffered by the hikers.
