10-18-2019 | 12:20 AM | CHARLOTTE,NC— Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are conducting an investigation into a collision involving a pedestrian which occurred on South Tryon Street near Carowinds Boulevard. On Friday, October 18, 2019, at around 12:20 a.m., officers received information describing a suspect who was breaking into the Gas-N-Go gas station at 13209 Carowinds Boulevard, which is in the Steele Creek Division.
When officers arrived, they located a suspect matching the description which had been provided to them, and this suspect refused to stop and fled on foot. While the suspect was fleeing from officers, the suspect crossed South Tryon Street in an unlit area not marked for pedestrian crossing and was struck by a 2016 BMW X3. He was transported to the hospital by MEDIC with life-threatening injuries.
Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit responded to the scene to conduct an investigation. The driver of the BMW was screened for impairment and none was detected. The driver was released from the scene and no charged were filed.

Detectives in the Steele Creek Division are conducting an investigation into the breaking and entering of the Gas-N-Go where the window to the front door had been broken. The Internal Affairs Bureau will also conduct a separate, internal investigation to determine whether CMPD policies and procedures were adhered to during the course of this incident.
