LAKE GROVE, NY: Suffolk County Police Sixth Squad detectives are investigating a crash that seriously injured a pedestrian in Lake Grove on Thursday December 15, 2016.

Cynthia Smith was driving a 2002 Chrysler minivan westbound on Route 347 at approximately 7 p.m. when she struck a pedestrian that was in her lane of travel west of New Moriches Road. Smith, 56, of Stony Brook, immediately pulled over and called 911. The pedestrian, Benito Martinez, 44, of Port Jeff Station, was transported by ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Smith and her passenger, Patricia Smith, 79, of Stony Brook were not injured.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing.



Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the death of a man who was found in Deer Park this afternoon.A man was found dead with stab wounds in front of 145 Old Country Road at approximately 1:30 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

Detectives believe the man may have been killed several hours before the body was found. The victim’s identification is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
