07-09-2019 | 11:30 AM | CHARLOTTE,NC UPDATE: Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit have charged a second suspect, Kiara Monique Murphy, DOB: 07/06/1993, for her involvement in this case.

As a result of continued investigation into this case, Murphy was identified as a suspect.  On July 10, 2019, members of the CMPD’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) located Murphy.  She was transported to police headquarters and interviewed by Homicide Unit detectives.  At the conclusion of the interview, Murphy was subsequently transported to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and charged with Murder, Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and Conspiracy to Commit Robbery.This is an active and ongoing investigation.

ORIGINAL: The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit is investigating an officer-involved shooting involving members of the Pineville Police Department that occurred in the 9700 block of South Boulevard.  This location is in the Steele Creek Division.

On Tuesday, July 9, 2019, at 11:32 a.m., the communication centers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and the Pineville Police Department began receiving multiple calls in reference to an armed robbery at the Steak ‘n Shake restaurant located at 9700 South Boulevard.  Officers with both jurisdictions responded to the scene.  Officers with the Pineville Police Department arrived first and encountered an armed suspect inside the business.  During the encounter, at least one Pineville Police Department officer perceived an imminent, lethal threat and discharged a firearm, striking the suspect.

Officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department arrived shortly thereafter and began working to secure the scene and attend to the wounded.  An employee of the restaurant, who sustained an apparent gunshot wound from the suspect, was pronounced deceased on scene by MEDIC.  A second victim was transported by MEDIC to Atrium Health’s Carolina’s Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.  Detectives are currently working to determine the source of the gunfire and the circumstances that injured the second victim.

MEDIC also transported the suspect to Atrium Health’s Carolina’s Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to canvass the area and to conduct the investigation.  Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence.  Representatives of the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Homicide Prosecution Team, Victim Services, CFD, MEDIC, and Operations Command also responded to the scene.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is the lead agency on the criminal investigation.  Pineville Police Department will conduct its own internal investigation.  Any questions concerning the identities of the officers involved and their personnel history should be directed to the Pineville Police Department.

This is an active and ongoing investigation.

06-14-2019 | 9:45 AM | PATCHOGUE,NY — Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad and Arson Section detectives are investigating a fatal fire that killed a resident at a Patchogue home this morning.  

Fifth Precinct officers responded to 72 Ohls St., at approximately 9:45 a.m. after a 911 caller reported a fire at the location. Elisa Doughty, 65, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner. Kristle Doughty, 34, Elisa’s daughter, also a resident of the home, was transported by North Patchogue Fire Department Ambulance to Stony Brook Hospital with burns to her arm.

Fire officials say the victim was found in the basement apartment of the home. Officials are investigating whether the basement apartment was an illegal addition.

North Patchogue Fire Department Chief Thomas Wassmer said “The stairwell becomes like a chimney and all the heat shoots up there. When she turned around, that’s when I’m figuring she got the burns, when the fire started picking up a little bit and forced her back up the stairs.”

Chief Wassmer said the elderly victim was found in the kitchen/living room area of the apartment.

North Patchogue, Hagerman, Blue Point, Patchogue and Medford Fire Departments responded to extinguish the fire.

Following a preliminary investigation, detectives believe the fire to be non-criminal in nature.

05-27-2019 | 9:34 PM | CHARLOTTE,NC  Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 8800 block of Orren Court in the Steele Creek Division. The call for service came in at 9:34 p.m. on Monday, May 27, 2019.

Steele Creek Division patrol officers along with the Charlotte-Fire Department and MEDIC personnel, responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call for service. Upon arrival, first responders located a male with an apparent gunshot wound located inside a vehicle. Medic pronounced the victim deceased at the scene. His name will be released once his family has been notified of his death.

Homicide Detectives are currently canvassing the area to determine whether there are any additional witnesses to this incident.

Crime Scene Search responded to the call for service to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives of the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Homicide Prosecution Team, Victim Services, CFD, Medic and Operations Command responded to the scene.

05-23-2019 | 3:40 pM | WEST BABYLON,NY Suffolk County Police First Squad detectives are investigating a shooting that injured a man in West Babylon this afternoon.

A man was sitting in a car at the corner of Commander Avenue and Straight Path when he was shot at approximately 3:40 p.m. The man, 24, of Lindenhurst, was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information about this shooting is asked to call the First Squad at 631-854-8152 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.  

05-04-2019 | 08:50 PM | MASTIC,NY — Suffolk County Police Major Case Unit detectives are investigating a hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian in Mastic last night. 

A man was crossing Herkimer Street, at the intersection of Carlton Street, when he was struck by a southbound 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe at approximately 8:50 p.m. The driver of the Tahoe, Joseph Virga, 55, of Mastic, stopped the vehicle and called 911. A second vehicle, also travelling southbound on Herkimer Street, then struck the victim and fled the scene.

The victim, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

Detectives believe the second vehicle that struck the victim is a dark colored, four-door sedan that fled the scene southbound on Mastic Road.
