Holbrook,NY: Saturday, August 25, 2018 at approximately 10:30 p.m.

Suffolk County Police Fifth Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash that killed two people and injured another person in Holbrook last night.

Jose Perez was driving a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe westbound on Woodside Avenue when he lost control of the vehicle, left the roadway and crashed in a wooded area at approximately 10:30 p.m.

Perez, 45, of Patchogue, and Luis Antonio Banegas, 39, of East Patchogue, a passenger in the backseat of the vehicle, were transported via ambulance to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue where they were pronounced dead.

Carlos Sarmiento, 34, of Patchogue, a passenger in the front seat of the vehicle, was transported to Long Island Community Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check. The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.

Ridge,NY: Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at approximately 11:20 a.m.

Suffolk County Police today arrested a man after he initiated a crash driving a stolen vehicle that killed five people in Ridge.

Jamel Turner, 23, of Bellport, was driving a stolen 2018 Camaro eastbound on Route 25, west of Woodlot Road when he crashed into a 2012 Mazda, also traveling eastbound at approximately 11:20 a.m. The Camaro then struck an oil truck traveling westbound and the Mazda struck a 1999 Infiniti traveling eastbound.

Lonidell Skinner, 19, of Bellport, was a passenger in the Camaro and was ejected. He was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner. Turner was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

All four people in the Mazda were pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner. The driver of the oil truck was transported to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Infiniti was not injured.

Major Case Unit detectives charged Turner with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 3rd Degree and False Personation. Turner also was charged with an outstanding warrant. Additional charges are anticipated.

The names of the four people who died in the crash are being withheld pending positive identification and notification of next of kin.

The investigation is continuing.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

EAST PATCHOGUE, NY : Sunday, January 14, 2018 at approximately 8:20 p.m

A Baldwin, New York man has been identified as the man found dead in the car. Detectives believe his death to be noncriminal in nature.

 

Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad and Arson Section detectives are investigating an incident in which a person was found dead in the driver’s seat of a car that burned in a fire on Montauk Highway on January 14, 2018.

Fifth Precinct Patrol officers responded to a 911 report of a car on fire in the parking lot of the business located at 1236 Montauk Highway, near Kane Avenue, at approximately 8:20 p.m.  The Hagerman Fire Department extinguished the fire without incident before discovering a body burned beyond recognition inside the vehicle.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner. The Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death. The victim’s identity will be determined following the autopsy. Arson Section detectives are continuing their investigation into the cause of the fire.
