Fifth Precinct officers responded to 72 Ohls St., at approximately 9:45 a.m. after a 911 caller reported a fire at the location. Elisa Doughty, 65, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner. Kristle Doughty, 34, Elisa’s daughter, also a resident of the home, was transported by North Patchogue Fire Department Ambulance to Stony Brook Hospital with burns to her arm.
Fire officials say the victim was found in the basement apartment of the home. Officials are investigating whether the basement apartment was an illegal addition.
North Patchogue Fire Department Chief Thomas Wassmer said “The stairwell becomes like a chimney and all the heat shoots up there. When she turned around, that’s when I’m figuring she got the burns, when the fire started picking up a little bit and forced her back up the stairs.”
Chief Wassmer said the elderly victim was found in the kitchen/living room area of the apartment.
North Patchogue, Hagerman, Blue Point, Patchogue and Medford Fire Departments responded to extinguish the fire.
Following a preliminary investigation, detectives believe the fire to be non-criminal in nature.
