11-24-2019 | 3:34 PM | CHARLOTTE,NC— Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Unit are investigating a fatal vehicle crash in the South Division.
On Sunday, November 24, 2019 at approximately 3:34 p.m., South and Independence Division officers responded to the 5700 block of Providence Road in reference to a single motor-vehicle crash involving a pedestrian. Upon their arrival, officers located a 2008 Nissan Altima that was being driven by Eileen Redmond Miller. They also located a pedestrian in the roadway unconscious. Rhonda Michelle Cook, 52 had been struck by the Nissan.
Paramedics arrived and began CPR and other life-saving measures. The victim was transported to Atrium Health’s Carolinas Medical Center where she was later pronounced deceased. Eileen Miller and her passenger did not sustain any injuries in this crash. The Major Crash Unit responded to conduct the investigation.
The preliminary investigation has revealed that the Rhonda Cook was crossing Providence Road near Old Providence Road when she was struck by the Nissan Altima. The Nissan had been traveling southbound on Providence Road in the left straight lane at the time of the crash. Neither speed or impairment are contributing factors for the Nissan in this crash. A crosswalk was not being used by Rhonda Cook when she was struck. No charges have been filed against Eileen Miller at this time.

On Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at approximately 6:01 p.m., CMPD officers from South Division responded to the 5400 block of Sharon Road in reference to a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian in which the pedestrian was pronounced deceased on scene. Upon arrival, officers located the victim in the roadway and a 2005 Lexus RX330 that had been involved in the crash.
The preliminary investigation shows that the Lexus, driven by Lauren Savage, was traveling northeast in the left hand lane of travel on Sharon Road and the victim was crossing Sharon Road to the west. The Lexus struck the victim within the left hand lane of travel and came to a stop within the left lane. The victim also came to a final resting position in the left lane. The victim was not crossing in a crosswalk; however there are no crosswalks in the area. Speed and impairment are not factors in this crash for the driver of the Lexus. At this there is no evidence of impairment for the victim. At the time of the crash it was dark and raining with limited visibility in the area.
